The heat was well and truly on all the way through Thursday 11 August into the early hours of Friday the 12th, as fourteen Public Protector hopefuls battled it out with the ad hoc parliamentary committee mulling the replacement of the indomitable Thuli Madonsela. Closet skeletons were brought out and given a good dusting as past embarrassments and missteps were placed under the microscope. And all to the good. Given the increasingly central and indispensable role played by this important stalwart of democracy in South Africa, the public has an unprecedented interest in seeing that the next person to take up the mantle of Public Protector is capable of filling the mammoth shoes left by the outgoing incumbent.
A shortlist of the 14 hopefuls and short biographies on each of them can be found on the Corruption Watch website. A blow-by-blow update on the interviews can also be accessed on News24. This is truly a matter that all South Africans should be keenly interested in, as it affects the future health of our democracy and legal system.
